OVERVIEW OF SLOUGH
Sitting just off the M4, and with Heathrow airport in easy reach, its easy to see why the town of Slough has developed massively in recent times. It began as a small settlement in Norman times, but its geographical location has ensured that it’s become a hub for many huge companies to situate their headquarters in. Only 20 miles and 20 minutes from London by train, and with one of the world’s busiest international airports on its doorstep, it’s no wonder that Slough has grown rapidly both in popularity and population.
Slough has a diverse and multicultural population of over 150,000 with many attracted by its status as a fast-emerging trading centre and focus for large companies such as McAfee, Nintendo, Burger King, DHL and Lego to base their UK HQ’s. And because of its closeness to London, Heathrow airport and also the likes of Windsor and Reading, it’s a commuters dream. This all means that Slough is a really buzzy town, especially in the early morning and late afternoon. Its desirability is heightened by being one of the less expensive areas to live near London, despite being surrounded by a number of expensive towns and villages.
Affordable and with excellent connections into the capital city and Heathrow, it’s no wonder that Slough’s stock has risen so much in recent times. However, Slough is not simply a commuter town. It has some great places to visit too, such as the excellent museum St Laurence’s Church (the oldest building in the town).Slough’s size means that its very easy to walk around in a day, whilst there are 61 cycle routes that run through central Slough, making it a great place for getting around on two wheels.
But there’s no escaping from the town’s position, which is why so many visitors and tourists use it as a base for visiting London, Windsor, Eton, Legoland, or before jetting overseas. Take nearby Windsor - a hugely popular town and situated less than 4 miles away from Slough. Windsor’s splendour, which includes its 900-year-old Castle, sees visitors flock there all year round.
With a booming local economy, affordable living, great transport links, and with Heathrow being a huge magnet for regeneration, Slough is a town on the rise.
