What is an Employment Tribunal?

Employment tribunals are independent judicial bodies with the power to resolve disputes over employment rights. Tribunal proceedings are not as formal as courts but the decisions they make are legally binding.  

Employment Tribunals generally make judgements on claims relating to:

• Unfair dismissal
• Breach of contract
• Redundancy issues
• Harassment
• Failure to follow correct procedure during the disciplinary or grievance process
• Issues regarding equal pay
• Constructive dismissal
• Workplace discrimination on the grounds of disability, age, sex, maternity, sexuality, race, trade union activities, and religion or belief

Worth Noting - You only have 3 months from the date of dismissal, or the date the unfair treatment last occurred, to apply for a tribunal hearing.
In exceptional circumstances, the employment tribunal may accept claims outside this time frame.
