About Sheffield

Sheffield is a vibrant, diverse city that was forged in steel but now makes others green with envy thanks to over 60% of the city being green space with an estimated two million plus trees, and over 250 gardens, parks, and woodland areas. Oh, and around a third of the city lies within the borders of the Peak District national park, too. The Steel City is now seen as an ideal city….

The largest city in South Yorkshire, Sheffield is a city of 7 hills, 5 rivers, and those aforementioned trees and green spaces – but it’s urban centre is a fusion of the hip and the happening, and where regeneration meets a legendary music scene; and where the peaks meet stunning Victorian and modern architecture. With two universities and a creative, multicultural population, it will come as no surprise that Sheffield hosts some great nightlife; a variety of sports facilities; cutting-edge street art; niche shopping; a burgeoning foodie scene; brilliant pubs and microbreweries; award-winning theatre; and a number of festivals throughout the year.

Sheffield is a great city to chill out or be entertained in. It’s a delightful city of contrasts - Sheffield boasts not only the title of the UK's Greenest City in 2021 (NatWest's Green Cities Report) but also a thriving underground art, music and cultural scene and the UK's largest community of artists and designers outside of London. The city played a crucial role in the Industrial Revolution, predominantly through steel production. Famed for its down-to-earth, friendly persona, Sheffield is also known for its sense of creativity and innovation too, something that its rightly proud of.

Heritage and history are a huge part of the city and also part of its sporting offer too, as the city is home both to the world's oldest football club Sheffield FC and the world's oldest football ground. Matches between the two professional clubs, Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday, are known as the Steel City derby and fiercely contested, whilst the city is also home to the World Snooker Championship, hosted at the world famous Crucible Theatre.

Sheffield railway station connects the city to a number of other cities and towns including the likes of London, Nottingham, Manchester, and Leeds, and there are several local rail routes running along the city's valleys and beyond, connecting it with other parts of South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Derbyshire. The city is close to both the M1 and M18 motorways, whilst its nearest airport is Doncaster Sheffield Airport which is located 18 miles from the city centre. A big plus is the city’s tram system (The Sheffield Supertram) which opened in 1994 and boasts 37 miles of track that serves the city and beyond.
