ABOUT PORTSMOUTH

The UK’s only island city, Portsmouth mixes city life, coastline, history, great shopping, and plenty of things to do, see, and visit. Called The Great Waterfront City, Portsmouth is located on the south coast in Hampshire, and is affectionately known as ‘Pompey’. It’s the birthplace of Charles Dickens and Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and the home of the Royal Navy, with the city being granted its first charter in 1194.

Portsmouth’s location is unique: it is around 10 square miles in size and is situated on Portsea Island. It’s bordered on the south by The Solent, on the west by Portsmouth Harbour and on the east by Langstone harbour. Connection to the mainland is provided by three road bridges - the Portsbridge A3 London Road crossing, the A2030 Eastern Road, the M275 motorway - and also by a railway bridge at Hilsea.

The city has a rich naval history, with its focal point being the Historical Dockyard. This area houses some of the most historical and iconic warships in the world such as HMS Victory, Lord Nelson's flagship that was used at the Battle of Trafalgar, and the amazing Mary Rose, from the Tudor times.

But Pompey isn’t just about the past……

As well as two cathedrals, a dozen or so museums, a castle, and a university, Portsmouth has any number of places to eat, drink, and be entertained in, plus a range of theatres and concert venues, too. It also boasts some great retail opportunities, with those who like to shop well catered-for by department stores and a number of distinctive independent shops in Southsea (the bohemian and buzzy Albert Road in particular is a great place to wander down); then there’s the city centre offering high street names, a large shopping centre (Cascade Shopping Centre), and a traditional street market; whilst Gunwharf Quays features a range of top designer outlets and places to eat and drink. This is where you’ll find the impressive, imposing Spinnaker Tower, a striking 170 metre landmark which offers excellent views of the Solent and city. Those with a head for heights can take the lift to the observation deck and step onto the Sky Walk – the largest glass floor in Europe.

Compact and relatively flat, Portsmouth is a great city to get around on foot and boasts four miles of pebbled beaches. Despite being an island, it has a range of transport links that make it a popular city to live in, work in, or visit. Portsmouth & Southsea railway station links the city to London Waterloo in around 90 minutes, and also to the likes of Brighton, Bristol, Cardiff, Southampton, and Gatwick Airport, too. The city is easily accessible by car via the M275 via the M27 and A27, and as you would expect, as the Great Waterfront City, Portsmouth has numerous options for arriving or departing by boat. These range from taking a ferry to a number of mainland Europe destinations including Caen, Cherbourg and St. Malo - to using the Portsmouth Harbour ferry port that takes you to the Isle of Wight in around 25 minutes.
