Two cathedrals; lovely riverside walks; over 1500 historic buildings and 33 medieval churches within the city; charming medieval streets contrasting with great shopping and a thriving café culture; stunning countryside and beaches on its doorstep; and the only English city that lies inside a national park – the Norfolk Broads…..Norwich really is s superb city, and possibly one of the UK’s best-kept secrets too?
Considered to be the capital of East Anglia, Norwich is a fascinating, relaxed city that really does have something for everyone. It’s situated on the picturesque River Wensum, and back in the Middle Ages it was the second largest city in the UK after London. Boasting a fascinating history of culture and history, Norwich is the most complete medieval city in the country. It’s teeming with beautiful architecture, with quaint cobbled streets and lanes and stunning half-timbered houses at its very core, but it also is a vibrant modern city with a large student population, too.
It’s a city of contrasts: where some of the most picture-postcard-perfect lanes and streets in the country stand side-by-side with high street names and quirky independents; and where the skyline-dominating Norman Cathedral happily shares a city centre with The Forum, a state-of-the art riverside development.
The centre point of the city is the impressive Norman Cathedral, where the building was started in 1096 and took nearly 200 years to complete. It boasts the second tallest spire and second largest medieval cloisters in England. Norwich also has a Roman Catholic Cathedral, which makes the city one of a handful in the UK to have two cathedrals.
The two cathedrals are surrounded by a number of meandering lanes, streets, markets, alleys, and open spaces that give Norwich a refined and relaxed vibe that can sometimes make you think that you aren’t in a city centre at all. Closeby, are popular pubs and bars, any number of top-class eateries, superb arts and culture venues, plus shops and malls that are a great mix of the high-end, the high street, and the highly-independent, including the largest permanent open-air market in England. Other great places to visit include Norwich Castle, The Museum of Norwich, Blickling Hall, the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, Dragon Hall, and Tombland – an area that features an array of medieval cobblestone streets, crooked timber beamed houses, and lovely little cafes and curio shops.
Whilst Norwich is a city that really does demand that you explore it on foot, it has good transport links, too. The city lies north of the A47 which connects it with Great Yarmouth to the east, and King’s Lynn and Peterborough to the west, whilst the A11 links it to Cambridge and the M11 motorway for London and the M25. Ipswich lies to the south of the city and is connected by the A140, whilst Norwich railway station is centrally located and connects the city to London Liverpool Street, whilst Norwich Airport lies 2.5 miles north of the city.
