OVERVIEW OF CHESTER

Chester is a popular and attractive city, one that is encircled by a two mile ring of Roman and medieval walls, with every step that you take making you feel like you’re treading on a different piece of history. Perhaps those of Roman Legionnaires, Viking raiders, or Norman invaders? It’s a visually stunning and charming small city that is full of history at every time. Developed as a major Roman fortress, further developments from Saxon to Victorian times have seen Chester grow into a major urban centre in the northwest of England.

Whilst the old meets the new, it’s still the work of the Ancient Romans which sees Chester as a major tourist hotspot. It’s an extremely walkable city that is located on the River Dee, close to the English-Welsh border, and is the administrative centre of Cheshire. It’s a place that seamlessly blends the historic and the contemporary. Just take a look at the unique ‘Rows’ for confirmation: Stunning buildings with shops or dwellings on the lowest two storeys, with the ground floor often at a lower level than the street and accessed by steps, which sometimes lead to a crypt-like vault.

The city centre is compact and a Roman grid pattern of streets still remain and are linked with a series of atmospheric alleyways, lanes, and walkways and arguably has the most archaeological and architectural Roman treasures preserved to this day. Because of its size, many visitors (and residents) love to take a stroll along the city walls or around the amphitheatre, admiring the many stunning architectural and historical landmarks, gates, and towers along the way, with the opportunity to then take a small detour to maybe look in a shop that takes their fancy or grab a bite to eat or drink in a city noted for its café culture. It’s a city of contrasts: Whilst walking, you’ll very probably take a photograph of one of the many impressive landmarks such as the iconic Eastgate ornate clock or the imposing thousand year old Cathedral, whilst stood outside a chic boutique or restaurant. And the short walk from the city centre, through Grosvenor Park and down to the River Dee is an absolute delight, and it’s a great spot just to sit there and people watch and let the world go by.

Whilst its roots are firmly in its history, there is plenty about modern day Chester to admire and immerse yourself in. Shopping opportunities are excellent, with any number of independent retailers stood next to famous high street names, whilst just 10 miles away lies the designer outlet village, Cheshire Oaks. Foodies and night owls are also excellently catered for, whilst there are a number of festivals that run throughout the year such as the Chester Literature Festival, the Royal Cheshire County Show, and the Chester Heritage Festival.

It might be located in the North West of England, but Chester is within touching distanced of North Wales and The Midlands, and Chester is a hub for major roads, including the M53 and M56 motorways that link the city to, amongst others, Manchester and Liverpool. The A55 road runs nearby and winds its way along the picturesque North Walian coastline. Chester railway station is central and connects the city to towns and cities such as Crewe, Liverpool, London Euston (via Crewe), to Manchester Piccadilly (via Warrington Bank Quay) and Cardiff Central/Birmingham International (via Wrexham General), whilst Liverpool and Manchester airports are easily reachable.
