With London close by, you can almost forget what a great place Berkshire is to work, live, or visit. But the proximity to the capital is another reason to pay a visit to a county that has more than enough to keep you occupied. From Royal palaces to a leading UK theme park, and from pretty villages perched alongside the River Thames to a region noted for hosting stunning horse racing.
Berkshire is a county with unique connections to the Royal Family. Windsor is where many flock, being the home of Windsor Castle, one of the official residences of the Queen. Indeed, Berkshire was recognised by Queen Elizabeth II as the Royal County of Berkshire in 1957 because of the presence of Windsor Castle, and letters patent were issued in 1974. Windsor sits on the banks of the Thames, has the stunning Windsor Great Park, and sees floods of tourists and visitors all year round – it’s also a great base for exploring the rest of the county, too. It’s a town that is steeped in history and heritage, and has a number of lovely parks and gardens, picturesque riverside walks, and a bustling shopping centre with plenty of places to get a bite to eat or a drink, whilst Legoland Windsor is a short journey away and great for the kids.
But the county is about far more than Windsor. It’s home to a host of great towns and villages, many of which are located on or by the banks of the meandering River Thames. The likes of Newbury, Hungerford, Waltham St Lawrence, Eton, and Hurley are great places to have a potter around, whilst the county’s largest town – Reading – is a modern town with a medieval history and has a variety of things to do and see including a world-famous music festival, Reading Abbey, some stunning Georgian and Victorian buildings, and a number of museums, galleries, and venues.
Berkshire is also seen as a mecca of horse racing, too. The county hosts more Group 1 flat horse races than any other county, and the iconic Ascot racecourse is one of the leading racecourses in the world and is closely associated with the British Royal Family and a plethora of famous, iconic races. Berkshire also has two other racecourses too, located in Newbury and Windsor.
As stated before, Berkshire’s location is a huge draw for many people. It’s extremely popular for commuting by rail into London, whilst the M4 motorway runs east to the capital (and also west to the likes of Bristol, Cardiff, and Swansea). Reading is a major rail interchange that links the town to a host of other towns and cities, whilst London Heathrow is just over the county border and next to the M4, whilst London Gatwick is also within easy reach.
