Bath is a city straight from the pages of a Jane Austen novel. Wander around its streets and what strikes you first is the iconic Bath's honey-coloured Georgian architecture. But Bath is about so much more than what you see, even though the architecture is both jaw-droppingly visually stunning and has been painstakingly reserved. No wonder that this gem is a World Heritage City.
Bath is an elegant city full of history, heritage, beautiful green spaces, tons of culture, but with a modern creative twist. Add in its great location too: close to rolling Somerset countryside, near Stonehenge and Longleat Safari Park. and not too far from the southwest coastline. And it’s only a dozen or so miles away from buzzing Bristol. As well as its architecture – including the iconic Royal Crescent, the Pulteney Bridge over the River Avon, and the Circus - Bath is known as city of wellness too, with the original Roman Baths (that have been around since 70AD) being a huge attraction for visitors, whilst Thermae is the UK's only natural thermal spa.
With a city population of around 100,000 Bath is a very compact and walkable city, with many of the main sights and attractions within a stroll of each other. It’s an extremely visitor-friendly city, and as well as a wealth of things and places to see, the centre has a huge selection of museums and galleries, superb shopping (especially independent and niche stores), is teeming with places to eat and drink, and there are festivals and events springing up throughout the year. It’s a city full of quintessential British culture, and one that quite rightly is right up there as one of the most popular cities in the UK to visit. Over a million visitors a year highlights Bath’s popularity, but despite being quite small, there’s enough to see, do, and visit to ensure that your time will be busy, its also a city to relax and feel comfortable in, too. And whilst many flock there for the spas, architecture, boat tours, the beautiful parks and gardens, theatres, museums and the various carnivals and events – there are also two universities in Bath, ensuring that the city also has a youthful, creative vibe, too.
Bath is close to the M4 motorway which links it to the likes of Bristol, Cardiff, and London, and the city introduced a Class C Clean Air Zone in 2021, the first pollution road charging zone outside London in the UK. Many visitors use the numerous park and ride schemes dotted around the outskirts of the city to get in and out, whilst for further flung destinations Bristol is the nearest airport. When it comes to rail transport, Bath is served by the Bath Spa railway station which has regular connections to the likes of London, Bristol and Cardiff, Cheltenham, Exeter, Plymouth and Southampton.
With history at every turn and a wealth of places to see and things to do - allied to a creative, forward-thinking mentality - it’s easy to see why Bath is loved by so many people.
