OVERVIEW OF COVENTRY
Is your city looking for a cathedral? Perhaps it should give Coventry a call – it has three!
Built around nine centuries ago, St. Mary's stood for just over 400 years, before in 1918 St. Michael's parish church was elevated to the status of cathedral. In ruins after being bombed in the Second World War, it's fondly known as "The Old Cathedral", but the decision to build the New Cathedral was made only the day after the old one was destroyed in the blitz showing the spirit of the city and its people. The cathedral is the focal point of the city centre, but Coventry has so much more to see and do….. especially now, as it’s the UK City of Culture 2021 and a host city for the Commonwealth Games in 2022.
Coventry is the most central city in England and is also one of the most historic cities in England, dating back to the Romans, Saxons, and Danes. In more recent times, it was a hub of the engineering and manufacturing industries, probably most famous for manufacturing cars, with the world-renowned Jaguar still predominant in the city – indeed, the Transport Museum is well worth a visit.
‘Cov’ is a very compact city, easily covered on foot, and due to its UK City of Culture award, its regeneration has carried on apace. That means there are a number of new art installations, pedestrianised areas, town squares, markets, galleries……it’s a city that has a wide range of architectural styles to feast your eyes upon. The title of UK City of Culture 2021 sees a whole year of events taking place in Coventry: music, dance, theatre, pop-ups…..all adding to the cultural and creative history that the city has in abundance.
Coventry has something for everyone – from arts and culture to medieval history; from theatre and festivals to museums; from great shopping and nightlife to cathedrals; from leading universities to independent retailers; and from ancient legends to a range of excellent sporting venues. It’s a city for all generations, and certainly one for the present and future. It’s also in a great location too, situated right in the heart of the country and only one hour from central London by train and twenty minutes from Birmingham. It’s close to the M1, M6, M40, M45 and M69 motorways, has a major international airport (Birmingham) just 11 miles away, and is well connected to other towns and cities by rail and bus.
